How to Freeze Cheese

Freezing Cheese is a great way to take advantage of cheap cheese purchased on sale with coupons. Hard cheeses such as cheddar and colby and soft cheese like mozzarella can be frozen for up to 3 months.

For bags of individually wrapped cheese sticks I throw the whole bag into the freezer. For sliced cheese packs I put the entire pack into a freezer bag and then into the freezer. Cheese cubes in bags are a little more work. I take them out of the original bag, lay them in layers on top of plastic wrap, wrap them tightly, then put them back into the original bag if it zips up.

I've never had any problem with frozen cheese. Just don't freeze cream cheese. It doesn't work. I found that out after buying a bunch philly cream cheeses once for $.15 each. They almost all ended up in the garbage.

Freezing cheese is the biggest money saver. Kroger had a sale $.99 for a 16 oz. and I stocked up. It's going to be a sad day when I run out.

I'm thinking that I've frozen cream cheese before without a problem. Maybe not.

I love to freeze cheese. My kids go through it like crazy so I always try to stock up.

The cream cheese is only good to freeze if you are gonna cook with it. Otherwise it's gritty. For some reason it looses it's moisture. :(

I'm slowly learning what I can freeze and can't freeze. What about shredded cheese? Does it go right in the freezer or do you recommend a freezer bag?

Thanks for the tip. After buying all that cheese yesterday (again thanks for that tip too), I am going to need to freeze some.

My kids wouldn't think to look in the fridge for cheese ... it's always frozen. Sour cream ... not so good frozen, it got very watery. I cooked with it, but no one wanted it on their taco.
