It's a Sick, Sick World!

My youngest daughter Ciarra has caught a stomach virus and we have been dealing with her sickness all day. Hopefully it will be a short-lived virus that the rest of us can manage to not catch. But this is not the sickness that I am writing about tonight. I'm writing about sick parents and sick in the head people.

First, Crystal at http://www.biblicalwomanhood.com/ shared this disturbing article about couples who have decided to not have children because doing so would be contributing to global pollution and decay. Here is an excerpt:

"Had Toni Vernelli gone ahead with her pregnancy ten years ago, she would know at first hand what it is like to cradle her own baby, to have a pair of innocent eyes gazing up at her with unconditional love, to feel a little hand slipping into hers - and a voice calling her Mummy.
But the very thought makes her shudder with horror.
Because when Toni terminated her pregnancy, she did so in the firm belief she was helping to save the planet. "

Read the whole article here. Now I really have a problem with the first couple. They say they didn't want children because of the environmental impact but they still take a long trip each year using jet fuel and seem to enjoy their lavish lifestyle. They said they enjoy being able to do as they please because they don't have kids. Well, that sounds more like the truth. Don't tell me that you don't want kids for one reason and then live contrarily to that reason.

Second, there are some very sad situations with kids and so-called parents. This article makes me want to cry. Read this article here. There is no telling what these kids have been subjected to during their small lives. Please pray for them.

Last, and very close to home, my husband teaches business classes to high school students. Today he had a guest speaker come talk to the students about credit cards, credit scores, and how to establish good credit. Many of his older 18 year-old students already are in credit card debt with no way to pay it off. They have $1000 balances with interest rates in the double digits. But the most disturbing thing he learned from his students was that many of their parents who themselves have incredibly bad credit have basically stolen their own kids' social security numbers and have ran up bad credit on their kids' numbers. Many told of their parents opening cell phone and furniture accounts under their security numbers. One kid is being harrassed at home by collectors for some of these accounts and she is only 15.

The kids are the victims over and over and over again. Satan must be thrilled.

Are You Brand Name Loyal or will Generic Do Ya?

Kacie at Sense to Save posed this great question to her blog readers today. Do I as a Thrifty Mama think that buying generic or store brand equals eating inferior quality food? Absolutely not! I am recalling (pun intended) that last year about this time both Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value Peanut Butter were being recalled due to salmonella. They were made at the same plant, the same ingredients, THE SAME PRODUCT! Yet, Great Value from Wal-Mart is less expensive. I was also told that the Bounty Basic Paper Towels are made at the same plant as the Food Lion brand paper towels. So, yes I buy store brand items. BUT . . .

If the Store Brand and the Name Brand are the same price due to sales or what not I will always buy the Name Brand. I know that I have been programmed by marketing and advertising to think that Brand Name is better.

There are some things I will not buy generic of: mainly toilet paper! Last month I was actually out of t.p. and just grabbed some at CVS to spend some extra bucks. I bought the CVS brand. It was horrible! In fact my youngest daughter Ciarra asked, "Why did you buy school toilet paper? It's hard." I will stick with my brand names-which ever one is on sale and I have a coupon!

Many times I can get the name brand product for less than the cost of store brand with my coupon shopping. Looking into my pantry I see Betty Crocker Cake Mixes, Vlasic Pickles, Uncle Ben's Rice, Kellogg's cereal, etc. I bought all of these items very cheaply. The cake mixes came from Target and were $.39 each, the Pickles were BOGO with coupon and cost me $.55 each jar, the rice was $.25 per box, and the cereal was $1 per box.

So, what about you? Are you name brand loyal or will generic do ya?

A Few Recipes for Holiday Baking

These are my absolute Tried and True recipes that are always a big hit with friends and family.

The Bestest, Softest, Sugar Cookie (Ciarra named these)
1 c. butter
1- 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. lemon extract (this is a must)
2 &3/4 c. flour (all purpose)
2 tsp. cream of tarter
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt

Cream butter, sugar and eggs. Add vanilla and lemon extracts. Add dry ingrediants. Roll into small balls, flatten and bake 8 to 10 minutes at 350 degrees.

These come out soft so I don't use this recipe for making shaped cookies. They taste heavenly!

Best Homemade Brownies
1 2/3 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 sticks butter, melted (can substitute margerine)
2 TBS water
2 large eggs
2 tsp vanilla
1 1/3 cup flour
3/4 cup powdered baking cocoa
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)
powdered sugar (optional)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9"x13" baking pan.Mix the sugar, butter, and water together. Add the eggs and vanilla and stir. In a seperate bowl, combine the flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Stir into the wet mixture. Stir in nuts, if desired. Spread batter into baking pan.Bake for 18-25 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out slightly sticky. Sprinkle with powdered sugar if you want.

Making the Holidays Special

I have been decorating the inside of our house for the past 36 hours and decided to take a break and share with you some of the traditions we have at our house that make Christmas time special. I try not to focus on just December 25th and getting gifts with the kids. I want them to experience love, peace, and joy throughout the season. Here are a few of our favorite things:

Fun Fridays
Every Friday in December the kids get a new board game and then we spend the weekend playing that game and others. This year they are getting Clue, the real Monopoly (we've had the Jr.), Disney Scene It, and Electronic Catchphrase. I picked all of these up on sale or clearance.

A book a day
Every year when we are putting our Christmas stuff away we wrap all of our Christmas theme books and put a number on them. When we get them down from the attic they are still wrapped and we don't know which book is which. Beginning on December 1st we unwrap one book and read it at night with hot chocolate. I bought many new titles this summer during an Amazon sale so I can't wait to read those. When the kids are older I will give them a set of the books for their homes. Many of the other books were given to us or I bought at yard sales.

Light Scavenger Hunt
Instead of just driving around looking at all of the wonderful light displays we make a list of items we hope to see and some that would just be outrageous. We drive around until we find most of the stuff on the list and then come home and talk about the crazy stuff. For example, last year we had "light up dolphin" on our list and we actually found one. It was in a yard where the guy had decorated his ski boat and had a yard ornament of dolphins jumping out of water.

Ornament of the Year
Each year at our local craft fair I let the kids pick out a special ornament to have personalized. These can be fairly expensive but they love pulling out their ornaments and remembering them.

Mrs. Claus Cake
On December 21st which is the first day of winter, Mrs. Claus brings the kids a fancy, icy, wintery cake straight from the North Pole Bakery. This is a very easy thing to pull-off and the kids love it! I go to my local grocery store and order a round cake and have them really decorate it fancy for Christmas. Then I put it in the garage freezer for a few hours so it gets icy. I or Dh pretends to hear a knock at the door and wow! there's a cake from Mrs. Claus. I include a note about how Christmas is very close now and to stay on the good list. Usually by this time the kids are out of school and restless. It is just another little thing that makes Christmas magical and gives them something to look forward to. Even though the two older ones know that "mom" does this, they still love it and look forward to it.

Do you and your family do something together that makes the season special? I would love to hear about it.

$20 off a $20 purchase at Babycenter.com (Deal Over)

Looks like they pulled this code already. Like many Internet deals you never know how long a good deal will last. Hope someone was able to use it.

There are a wide variety of items and gifts you could pick up pretty frugally at Babycenter today. Just place at least $20 of items in your cart and use code 22298ENFAMIL when checking out. It will take $20 off your order. Shipping is $6.65.

I picked up a "Super Dad" T-shirt for my husband from the kids for Christmas and a pack of pacifiers for the new baby.

Search around to find unique items. Some interesting things I saw were massage oils, a chocolate lovers kit, and some nice, plush sock sets.

Happy Shopping!

Super Target- I luuuuuv you!

So, I went to Target again today! I know, 3 times in less than a week! I never do that but I did get some great deals.

First, fresh brocoli, cauliflower, and celery are all on sale for $.99 this week. Using the $1 off fresh vegetable coupon that I posted here, all of it is free. My target does not limit how many of these I can use so I bought 2 celery, 5 cauliflower, and 5 brocoli. I am cooking 1 cauliflower for dinner and the rest I will blanche in hot water and then freeze. All of this was FREE!

Second, in the Target Toy catalog (which expires tomorrow) there were coupons for a Free Cranium seek and find puzzle kit when you buy any Cranium product. My target had a basket full of these catalogs and I helped myself to 5 of them; after all they had tons and they expire tomorrow. I bought (4) Cranium to go games which were $4.99 each. They were in clear tubes at the end of the games section. I then got (4) free Seek and Find puzzles which were $9.99 each. So I paid $20 and got $60 worth of Cranium products. Three of the to go games will go in the Kids' stockings and I will give them one of the puzzles on a Friday in December. The other 4 products will go into my gift closet for future birthday parties.

Third, this Target had a huge supply of Polly Pocket's for $2.49 each. I thought these would make great goodie bag gifts for Ciarra's 7th birthday party which is in early January. I used (10) of the $5 Polly Pocket printable coupons and got all 10 for free. The cashier adjusted the coupon to the purchase price of $2.49.

Last, I bought the Electronic Catchphrase Music Edition which is on sale for $15.00 and I used a $5.00 off coupon from the Target Toy Catalog and a $3 off coupon from Orville Redenbacher and Paid $7.00. I will also send in the receipt for a rebate of $3. So I got a $20 toy for $4.00. This will also be a "December Friday" game for the kids.

Total before coupons: $112
After coupons and rebate: $24

Grocery Deals at Target

If you have a Super Target nearby or a Target that stocks non-perishable food items there are some good deals to be had this week. If I travel to my neighboring county I am able to choose between 3 Super Targets for shopping. One happens to be close to our family dentist!

First, go here and print out your coupons. If you shop at Target regularly you should note that they put new coupons on their website every other Sunday. However, the coupons usually have longer expiration dates than two weeks they are posted so I print out a couple of sets and save some in my coupon binder in case there is a good deal after they have removed the coupons from their website. Now, for the good deals:

1. Stovetop Stuffing. It is on sale for $.79 per box. Use 4 of the Target Printables (TP) and pay only $.29 per box. If you have found some of the tearpad coupons for Buy 3 Get 1 Free then you can buy 4 boxes for $.87 total. I found a ton of these B3G1 coupons at Winn-Dixie this week.

2. Market Pantry Frozen Turkeys. On sale for $.68 per pound. Use the $2 off coupon and get a good deal.

3. M&Ms bags of candy are on sale for $2.00. Buy 2 bags and use 2 TP and 1 coupon from Sunday's paper for $1 off 2 bags and pay only $.50 per bag.

4. Betty Crocker cake mixes on sale for $.94. Use the $.50 TP and pay only $.44 per box

5. Cheetos and Fritos on sale for $1.50. Use the 1 TP and pay only $.50 per bag.

6. Swiss Miss hot chocolate on sale for $.99. I don't know of any coupons but this is a great sale price.

7. Vegetables- Buy broccoli, cauliflower, or celery and get $1.00 off. There are rarely coupons for fresh veggies.

8. Playtex Tampons- Buy 2 boxes of 36 count Sport and use 2 $2.50 off coupons found here. When you check out the cashier will be prompted to give you a $5.00 gift card.

Getting out of Debt: Part 2

This is the second part of a series I'm writing to show others how my husband and I have and continue to employ Dave Ramsey's getting out of debt plan. You can read Part 1 here.

Okay, so I hope you looked at your past 3 month's spending habits and didn't choke like we did when we first looked at our spending habits. I could not believe how much money we were spending and how much of it that I still had no clue about where it was going. My misc. category or ATM withdrawals were way too much and I didn't even know what I had bought!

So, what should a typical spending plan look like? It varies from family to family but overall your budget should look something like this. (I always use our "net" income not "gross" to figure our budget)

Housing including electricity, natural gas, property taxes, insurance, repairs, landline phone, should be no more than 35% of your pay.

Transportation including car payments, repairs, gasoline, oil changes, insurance, and yearly tag renewals should be no more than 15% of your pay.

Food including groceries and eating out should be another 15% of your pay.

Other Home bills such as cable/satelite, cell phone, Internet should be about 5%.

So, now you have 30% of your money left. If you have debt, then that is going to be a big chunk of your 30%. If you don't have debt (and congratulations by the way!) you have 30% left for savings, medical expenses, clothing, childcare, hobbies, entertainment, or giving away, etc.

But before you start spending that 30% you need to think about all those bills that seem to creep up on us only a few times per year or so. You have to save money in what some people call sinking funds or freedom accounts, otherwise when the bill shows up you won't have the money and you'll reach for credit cards to pay the bills. As Dave Ramsey says, "Christmas happens every year in December, don't act surprised when it gets here and you have nothing saved for it."

So what should you save for: birthdays, Christmas, new car tires, vacation, back to school shopping, etc, etc. You need to save for anything you plan to buy outside your normal monthly spending.

Your homework:

1. Look at the amounts you are spending monthly on the big budget areas. Are they closely in line with the guidelines above? or are they out of whack?

2. Figure out and make a list of what you need to save for throughout the year. These will have to be built into your budget. But that will be dealt with in Part 3.

3. Write down into 2 columns each of the big budget areas what you are currently spending and what the acceptable amount would be using the percentages above.

Here's an example: Assuming a $3,000 take home pay budget

Add to the bottom any categories you have that are not listed. You should know what those are based on what you found out from your Part 1 spending review.

Category Now Acceptable amount

If you have any questions or need help in doing this please email me or post a comment. These are very hard steps to take but I promise you that if you want financial freedom and not have to worry about bills anymore these are necessary steps! I want to help you because my life is so much better now and we haven't even made it all the way to debt free yet!

Score Great Savings at Limited Too!

Little girls love clothes and stuff from the Limited Too Store. Very rarely do we shop there because it is usually too expensive! But right now, thru Nov. 12th they have a great deal.

They are taking an additional 50% off all their clearance stuff. I put a denim skirt in my bag and on the clearance page it said $19.99, once in the bag it was $10 so it truly is an additional 50% off.

But wait, it gets better! When checking out put in code HP601 and you will get an additional 25% off. So the denim skirt was originally $39.50 but I will only pay $7.50! Usually a complete outfit at this store is $50-$90 but with this great deal you can pay $10-$20 per outfit.

Please click on my link to the right and start shopping. Their sizes tend to run slim so if you are unsure I would order up 1 size.

Celebrate with Me!

I received official word today that I am now a National Board Certified Teacher! This is one of the highest honors for teachers in the United States. It took a year of documenting and videoing my teaching as well as taking 6 assessment tests. Praise the Lord! I did it!

So, how does this fit into my Frugal lifestyle and getting out of debt?

All NBCT in Florida receive an annual bonus equal to 10% of the average teacher salary. So in a month or so I will be receiving a check for almost $5,000 before taxes! Discover Cards days are numbered. It will be gone in one swoop. I will also be eligible for another 10% bonus for mentoring other teachers. I will receive that check in the summer.

I am working on Getting out of Debt Part 2 and will be posting it this weekend. If you haven't done step 1 I really encourage you to do it. It will change your life!

Coupons I found at Sears yesterday

Yesterday while we were in Orange Park for dental appointments we stopped by the mall. Seeing how it is finally getting to be Fall-like in Florida and is actually susposed to be cold for the next few days I needed to buy a few maternity long-sleeve shirts. I headed to Sears where I've had good luck finding maternity clothes on clearance. While I was shopping, my kids were getting restless. I mean looking at mom's maternity selections is torture to my kids. Luckily I found what I needed quickly and we headed to the check-out. That is where, bless my kids hearts, they discovered something akin to gold, in my humble opinion! They found the Sears Wish book. But better than that lying next to the stack of free Wish books was a stack of flyers that prominently displayed the #1 item on their list- Nintendo DS!

I told each of their salivating little faces to grab a flyer and out the door we went. When we were driving home, my oldest dd Christin, proclaims loudly to this coupon-loving mom, "Mom, there are coupons on this flyer about the DS." She quickly passed the flyer to me and she enough there at the bottom is a coupon for "$10 off your next purchase of $50 or more". It is good on clothes, accessories, and electronics! Good until December 24th!

Since I plan to go to Sears early on Black Friday morning and price-match whoever has the best deal on the Nintendo DS, these will be great! I only wish they had grabbed a few more to share with my family and friends. Also, I hope to combine this with the $10 gift card offer they have on Black Friday where if you are one of the first so many in the store they give you a $10 gift card.

So, if you have a Sears nearby go hunt down these flyers with coupons. They look like they could make some really good deals!

What I am buying @ CVS this week.

I have planned my trip to CVS for today. I am going out of town for a dental appointment with my oldest daughter and I plan to pass by at least 3 CVS stores. I am sooo hoping to find another Nova Max or two but if that doesn't happen here are my plans:

1st Transaction:
1 countour meter on sale for $30
1 Ameal BP vitamins $29.99
Use these coupons:
10 off $50 purchase
$2 off $10 purchase
1 $30 coupon for the countour meter
1 $3 printable for the Ameal BP
$10 Extra Care bucks
Out of Pocket: $5
Earn: $29.99

So I just took a $10 ECB and turned it into $25

2nd Transaction:
4 boxes CVS cotton swabs (buy 1 @ $3.19 and get back $2)
10 Fruit2O's drink (on sale for BOGO $1.09) I have 5 coupons for $1 off from the Diabetes health booklet
1 Goody's Headache Powder (buy 1 @ $1.49 and get $1.49)
1 Countour Meter

Total: $50.15
Use these coupons:
$10 off $50 purchase
5 $1 off Fruit 2O's
1 $30 countor Meter
1 $2 off a $10 CVS purchase (swabs)
Pay out of pocket: $3.15
Earn $8 ECB from the swabs and $1.49 from teh Goody's

So I now will have $39.49 in Extra Bucks to save for use next week.

I have been buying the Essence of Beauty bags and robes for Christmas gifts with my Extrabucks. If I can find some more Nova Meters I will have most of my non-immediate family taken care of with these for free!

Gas Prices Going Up; tips to save money!

Last week, gas was $2.79 but today I paid $3.09 for a gallon. And according to many sources it will probably continue to rise for some time. And if you are heated in the winter through natural gas, the increase will hit you twice- in your home and at the pump. But besides bellyache about the increase what can a frugal family do to offset the rise in gas prices?

Many "green" economists and politicians say that we need to car pool or ride a bike but I just laugh out loud at these and other related suggestions! Like many of my friends and blog readers, I live in a rural area and have young children. It's not like I can put my three kids on a bike and ride to school over 5 miles away, and I live close by to my school/job. Many of my friends drive between 10 and 40 miles one way to work. Therefore most suggestions I hear on the news shows just go in one ear and out the other. What can a real mom do to offset these increases in gas prices?

1. Consolidate errands.
Being frugal should mean that you become a planner. Planning your trips can become as natural as planning your grocery store purchases. For example, if you need to drive to the post office think of other places that you may need to go this week and try to go all in one trip. In my own life, I drive my girls to the dance studio 5 times per week. Instead of coming home after school for them to change I make sure they take their dance clothes to school. I take them to the studio right after I get off work. I also know that there is a newspaper stand across the street from the studio that stocks Sunday papers all week long. Instead of driving around town on Sunday collecting newspapers I wait until Tuesday when the girls are at dance for 2 hours. I buy multiple copies and file them in my binder right then while they dance.

2. Keep your car cleaned out.
So, I know that those who know me probably just spit their Diet Coke on their computer screen but I'm making this a goal for the month of November. Extra weight in your car causes you to use more gasoline.

3. Buy gas where you can get a discount.
I know that many people boycott Wal-mart but their gas prices in my town are the lowest plus if I use a Wal-mart gift card I can save $.03 per gallon. Some other big box stores have similar discount plans.

4. Don't speed

5. Buy gas either early in the morning or later in the evening.
Gas has some kind of scientific property that allows it to expand at lower temperatures, therefore you actually get more volume of gas when the temperatures outside are cooler.

6. Turn your gas cap until you hear 3 clicks.
This means your tank is completely closed and the gas cannot evaporate around the sides. Who knew?

7. Stay at home more!
A no-brainer really. Find fun things to do with your family at home. Make homemade play dough, bake cookies, play board games. I love to stay home during cold weather with my comfy socks on all day and just play with my kids.

Nova Max Deal at CVS

I haven't posted much this week due to my dear husband being on vacation from UPS but I have confirmed that the NovaMax Deal at CVS is all November long. So, you still have time to find the coupons and find the meters. I asked our local CVS manager to order a few cases of them for all of my local friends and family that know about the deal. I am so thrilled that many of you have been successful with this at CVS and have some extrabucks to spend on necessities and hopefully save some money off of your grocery bill.
